2021Celebrated the 50th Anniversary, honoring the team's dedication and hard work.
2022
2022Launched the IR5, our first FTIR Spectrometer for mid-range infrared spectroscopy
2025
2025Launch of FS5 v2 Spectrofluorometer, the second iteration of the FS5.
1971
1971Founded as the first private company on Britain's inaugural University 'Research Park' by Professor Des Smith, OBE, FRS, FRSE, at Heriot Watt University.
1972
1972Launched its first sealed-off, continuous wave CO laser for the tunable spin-flip Raman laser.
1975
1975Designed and launched a series of CS infrared gas lasers (CO, CO2 and optically pumped far infrared). This ultimately led to the creation of "Edinburgh Sensors", our sister brand also located in Livingston.
1978
1978Introduced the first fluorescence lifetime spectrometer, utilizing a nanosecond flashlamp, in collaboration with Strathclyde University.
1987
1987Acquired rights for fluorescence spectroscopy instruments from Photochemical Research Associates Inc.
1991
1991Received the Export Award from the Scottish Council Development and Industry, launched the 900 Series of computer-automated luminescence spectrometers and mini CO2 laser. A range of Waveguide CO2 lasers are commercialised in co-operation with Ferranti.
1992
1992Partnered with Kimmon Electric (Japan) for developing switched mode power supplies for He:Cd lasers and introduced the first Laser Flash Photolysis Spectrometer.
2000
2000Launched combined FLS920 fluorescence lifetime and steady-state spectrometer and commercialized the TCC900 time-correlated single photon counting computer card.
2012
2012 Launched the FLS980 Spectrometer, setting industry standards for photoluminescence spectroscopy.
2013
2013Edinburgh Instruments joins the Techcomp Group Ltd. Launched the FS5 Spectrofluorometer, designed for the highest measurement specifications in both research and analytical markets.
2014
2014Launched the LP980 Transient Absorption Spectrometer, a first of its kind for a broad range of applications.
2016
2016Dr. Roger Fenske appointed as CEO.
2017
2017Launched FLS1000 Photoluminescence Spectrometer, a state-of-the-art spectrometer for both steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy.
2019
2019Launched the Compact RM5 and the DS5 Dual Beam UV-Vis Spectrophotometer.
2020
2020Launched the RMS1000, a high-end research grade confocal Raman Microscope designed for versatile Raman applications.
2021

For over 50 years, Edinburgh Instruments has been developing and manufacturing spectroscopic instruments for both academic and industrial markets. From humble beginnings as the first spin-out company on the UK’s earliest University research park at Heriot-Watt University, just outside Edinburgh in Scotland, we have grown into a global leader, continually advancing the field of molecular spectroscopy.

Our product range includes Photoluminescence, Raman, UV-Vis, FTIR, and Transient Absorption spectrometers. All of our products are designed and manufactured in the UK. In 2023 we reported a reduction of 14% of our Scope 1 & 2 emissions from our 2021 baseline.
