On 10th September, Edinburgh Instruments, Mechanical Design Engineer, Adam Loch climbed Ben Nevis along with friends and family to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charity.
The Ronald McDonald House Charity works to support families who have a child in in hospital. With medical care not always being close to home, families can find themselves travelling long distances to be with their child in hospital. The Ronald McDonald House Charity has 13 houses across the UK, moments away from children’s hospital wards, providing families with a comfortable and safe place to rest and recuperate. In 2021 The Ronald McDonald House charity supported 3,916 families across their 13 houses with an average stay of 16 nights. They helped to save families an average of £1,240 in out-of-pocket accommodation costs. It costs the charity £25 for one family to be accommodated in the house for one night.
The Ronald McDonald House Charity is extremely special to Adam and his family. In June his five-week-old daughter was rushed to the intensive care unit at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People as she was suffering from RSV and unable to breathe on her own. At an already traumatic time for the family, Adam and his partner began to worry about where they would stay, when staff informed them of the Ronald McDonald House located within the hospital. The house provided them with two comfortable beds, a communal living area and kitchen, as well as a toy room which was great for when their son came to visit. The charity provided them with a base nearby their daughter’s hospital bed, as well as a community of families within the house who could understand and connect with one another’s situations.
After spending 7 nights in the Ronald McDonald House, Adam and family are extremely grateful for the support they received from the charity. They took to climbing Ben Nevis to raise more money for the Ronald McDonald House Charity and support other families in need.
